چکیده

The fine structure of the coronal cilia of the rotifer Philodina citrina has been studied in detail. Specimens were fixed with OsO(4) and embedded in butyl-methyl methacrylate, Epon 812, or Vestopal and sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome. The details of structure of the rootlets, basal bodies, basal plates, and free cilia are described. The general structure of the rotifer ciliary apparatus conforms well to that established for other species. One of the main observations is the difference in structure of the peripheral filaments in the opposing halves of a cross-section of the free cilium. Also, in longitudinal sections evidence is offered for the existence of a helical structure in the peripheral filaments.

A spiral sleeve in rotifer cilia tips.

The fine structure of rotifer coronal cilia has been studied by Lansing & Lamy (1961), and Scholtyseck & Danneel (1962), who reported that they possessed the familiar structures common to all cilia. Cilia are also present in the gut of rotifers, where they stir the contents, and drive them along. This note describes an unusual structure in the tips of the intestinal cilia of the rotifer, Philod...

Downstream collecting in ciliary suspension feeders: the catch-up principle

Based on observations of feeding structures and currents in the polychaete Spirorbis tridentatus, the entoproct Loxosoma pectinaricola and the cycliophore Symbion pandora, which all possess compound cilia, it is hypothesized that their capture mechanism is based on the catch-up principle. According to this principle, the compound cilia constitute the pump which generates a flow with suspended p...

Effects of environmental factors on species diversity of rotifers using biodiversity indicators and canonical correlation analysis (CCA)

Rotifers are microscopic aquatic animals of phylum Rotifera, live in a diverse range of aquatic habitats. They are important in ecology of freshwater ecosystems by recycling nutrients and can alter trophic dynamic of planktonic communities. These features have also been used to infer environmental conditions in an aquatic habitat. Because of the important roles of this group of animals in the t...

A finite elements study on the role of primary cilia in sensing mechanical stimuli to cells by calculating their response to the fluid flow

The primary cilium which is an organelle in nearly every cell in the vertebrate body extends out of the cell surface like an antenna and is known as cell sensor of mechanical and chemical stimuli. In previous numerical simulations, researchers modeled this organelle as a cantilevered beam attached to the cell surface. In the present study, however, we present a novel model that accommodates for...
